It’s no surprise that Marvel is already working hard on planning its post-Avengers 4 movie slate. With Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 set to make a splash, there’s a lot of potential for the future of the cinematic universe. What might be surprising though is that Ant-Man, one of the MCU’s least revered stars, is apparently close to getting his very own trilogy of movies – at least according to one of the franchise’s stars.

Speaking with IGN, Michael Pena hinted that a third Ant-Man movie may already be under consideration at Marvel – giving the unlikely superhero a full movie trilogy;

“We talked about it on the first day. It’s a whole different kind of club to be in, the Marvel Universe. I don’t know if they’ll use me for the third movie, I still really don’t know. It’s cool to make a little bit of a mark on that Marvel Universe and it’s kind of a cool club, they run a really cool studio.”

The success of Ant-Man surprised many skeptics of the franchise. The original movie wasn’t viewed favorably prior to its release – with production issues and a director swap signaling potential issues. Yet the movie did well enough that the character has made appearances in other MCU movies, including Captain America: Civil War. The pint-sized hero will also be getting his own sequel – a rom-com featuring his counterpart The Wasp.

Despite Pena’s confidence, Marvel hasn’t yet revealed the official existence of a third movie. The movie studio hasn’t gone into details regarding its plans for Phase 4, other than letting audiences know they will be getting sequels to Spiderman and Guardians of the Galaxy. With Kevin Feige stating there are anywhere up to 20 movies in the pipeline – it wouldn’t surprise us to see Ant-Man getting a sequel somewhere in that mix.

It’s likely we’ll know more about the future of the franchise once Ant-Man and The Wasp gets released later this year. The movie is set to ride the coattails of Avengers: Infinity War, landing in cinemas this July.

Would you want to see another Ant-Man movie?

Our Take: Given the success of Marvel’s movies, we can’t be too surprised to see Ant-Man already being lined up for a sequel. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of movie we get though, given that the sequel is set to depart heavily from the original’s heist format.
