If you find yourself wondering why Marvel doesn’t do more to shake up its MCU, then you may be delighted to hear the latest rumors. These concern the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp – with evidence from Russia hinting that the sequel may be a romantic comedy.
That’s according to Kinometro, a Russian based media website that was attending the Kinorynok film festival. Press material handed out during the event seems to suggest that the movie will be going all-in with the idea of a romantic comedy. It would mark the first time that a Marvel Cinematic Universe film has gone in this direction.
In fairness, Peyton Reed has track-record within the romcom genre. The star was a big part of the romantic comedy The Break-Up, which lends credibility to the idea. Also helping this is the addition of Evangeline Lily’s Hope Van Dyne as a title character. Their relationship was briefly teased in the original movie, with audiences knowing that her character would likely take up The Wasp mantle.
Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has been experimenting more and more with genres outside the established superhero fold. The Russo Brothers first outing, Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, took huge inspiration from spy thrillers – putting it well outside the originals more traditional take on the character. The end result was a movie that did extremely well at the box office – trending well among critics and audiences.
Heck, even the original Ant-Man movie was advertised heavily on the back of being a heist movie. In that situatio, the gamble didn’t pay off so much – with the movie becoming one of the smaller grossing movies within the MCU. Despite this, the studio clearly believes that there’s a future for its size-changing hero in his own outings.
Our Take: We applaud Marvel if this rumor turns out to be true. On the other hand, will audiences really be interested in seeing Ant-Man, one of the least popular MCU characters, deviating so wildly?
