Austin Aries Released By WWE

Well that didn’t last long….

Tonight we learned the rather shocking news that WWE has released one of their stronger in-ring competitors, Austin Aries.

The confirmation came via the WWE.com website, which states;

“WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Austin Aries. WWE wishes Aries the best in all of his future endeavors.”

He posted some tweets around the time of the announcement, seemingly acknowledging it;

Austin Aries career largely took off in TNA. There he found himself as one of the company’s main attractions, capturing the TNA Heavyweight Championship during a long run with the company.

When he signed for WWE in 2015 – he was moved to the company’s NXT brand. There he was a standout performer, introduced to great pomp and ceremony. Sadly he  didn’t seem to gain much momentum down there, struggling to break into the brands top-tier of talent. He had chances to win the NXT Championship – but never secured it.

When 205 Live was established, he was tipped to be one of the main attractions of the brand. Sadly another injury put haste to these plans – as Austin Aries has been off television for several months now. He didn’t even return to the announcing table – a sign that something more was occurring.

It’s unclear at this time if the WWE Superstar requested his release or if there was an incident that forced the company to release him.

I can’t even explain this one. Austin Aries was arguably the second biggest star on the company’s 205 Live show. While recovering from injury, Aries featured on the announcing team – helping to establish a presence on the show long before stepping into the ring. When he finally recovered, he entered a feud with Cruiserweight Champion Adrian Neville. The pair fought across several pay per views, including the Wrestlemania 33 Pre-Show.

Whatever happened, I can’t imagine WWE will be happy that their investment in time and showcase went on a Superstar who is no longer with the company.

Are you surprised by this?
