The question of whether Ben Affleck will remain in the iconic Batman role has long hung over the DC movie universe. After being pushed out of the director’s chair for the upcoming Batman standalone movie, reports suggested that the Hollywood star was looking for ways out of the role. Something he’s only further suggested during an interview for Justice League.
Speaking during an interview with USA Today, Affleck dropped the biggest hint yet that he may not be long destined for the iconic DC role. When asked if he would have anything to do with the upcoming Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes), Affleck responded;
“something I’m contemplating,”
Before going on to say;
“You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”
Originally, Ben Affleck was down to write, direct and star in the Batman movie. It was reportedly one of the carrots used to tempt him into the role. When that movie began to falter, DC and Warner Bros made the decision to hand directorial and writing duties over to Matt Reeves – one of Hollywood’s big directors.
The move sparked rumors that the Batman movie may not even be set within the DC canon of movies – instead becoming a standalone flick. The fact that Ben Affleck isn’t committing to the movie yet will only add more voices to this discussion.
Our Take: I think it’s clear that Ben Affleck really wants out of the whole cinematic universe at some stage. After Dawn of Justice received critical hate, Affleck reportedly lost interest in the entire experiment. Hopefully, Justice League’s success might be able to convince the Hollywood star to reconsider his future. I’d love to see more of his interpretation of Batman on the big screen.
