The situation around Daniel Bryan is one that never seems to die. The former WWE Champion was forced to retire through injury several years back – despite being one of the most popular Superstars in the company. Since then, Bryan has been very open about the potential of returning to compete – with regular speculation that he may return to the indies once his WWE contract up. Now though, Bryan has revealed he is still trying to get cleared by WWE.
That’s according to The Trentorian, who spoke with the former WWE Champion. In an interesting interview, Bryan revealed that he’s still working to get cleared by the company – and that they’d love to have him back inside the ring as a wrestler.
“I’m trying to get cleared as we speak. All my tests have come back fantastic, better than people who have never had any concussion-type stuff. But it’s a weird thing. We’re in a weird situation politically with the climate around concussions; right now, it’s very difficult. WWE would love to have me back, but is that the smart thing for me as a business to bring me back? If I was to come back, and they let me back, would they get a lot of flak for it? They have a ton of stockholders that they’re responsible for. It’s more than just, ‘Is he healthy to do it?’
“There’s more than that to the whole situation. All the concussion doctors think that I’m healthy enough to do it, and that I should be able to do it — well, I don’t want to say all of them, I’m sure there’s somebody out there who doesn’t think that — but there’s a lot more than goes into it than just that. That’s the unfortunate situation with giant corporations and big business in the United States.”
With reports that his current WWE contract is set to expire next August, Bryan may end up competing anywhere in the world come this time next year. It’s the topic of discussion regularly on the internet, with Bryan’s return seen as a case of “when” rather than “if”.
Our Take: Indie fans like to rail against WWE, the reality remains that Bryan hid his concussion history from them. WWE has to protect their Superstars, even if they insisdt they can still go. When his contract is up, he can go to any number of promotions and make a killing – but that won’t be WWE’s concern.
