With the Star Wars movie catalogue set to be expanded this year, there’s plenty of speculation that we may yet see that long desired Obi-Wan Kenobi. Rumors continue to swirl that Disney is up for the idea – not that Ewan McGregor is going to reveal anything.
Speaking to EW, McGregor said that he hasn’t been contacted, nor does he expect it to occur anytime soon;
“There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything… But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”
Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy has previously said that Disney is pondering announcing the next Anthology movie this summer. She told MTV recently;
“I think we’re getting close. My hope would be [to announce] sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.”
McGregor rose to fame in the prequel Star Wars movies, portraying a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was highly praised at the time for this, despite the mixed reception of the flicks. Ewan himself has been busy in recent times with T2 Trainspotting and his ongoing role in FX’s Fargo, but there’s nothing stopping him from taking such a role.
Would you want to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie?
