Former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes has made a huge splash on the indie scene since leaving the company last year. His stock has risen as he’s travelled round the indies collecting Championships. Perhaps the most disappointing thing about the whole situation though was the fact that he wasn’t allowed to use the Rhodes name – a name made famous by his father.
In a recent interview with SI.com – the former Superstar said that he’s not overly bothered about it these days;
“I’ll tell you this, and I’ve not told anyone this, but I don’t mind that WWE took away my last name. Deep down, in my bones, I definitely want it back – and I have plans to get it back – but there is something to being Cody. The longer I don’t have a last name, the more I’m OK with it. That’s not to say WWE is holding it ransom. It’s literally an intellectual property law that easily can be remedied, but there is something about being Cody that I don’t mind.
“There is something to not always reminding people of a show they’ve already seen, but instead embracing the one right in front of him. I am Cody, and I can promise you that the future is going to be even better than the past.”
It still remains a huge shame that Cody isn’t allowed to use the name made famous by his father, in particular given all that the Dusty Rhodes did for WWE over the years.
Not that it’s stopped Cody from marching on. His wrestling career continues to flourish and, as he says in the same interview, he’s looking to build his own legacy moving forward.
There was a time when WWE seemingly considered Cody the future of the company. Back when he was a member of Legacy, he seemed to be destined for the main event picture. Sadly this never panned out for him.
What do you hope Cody does next?
