Madison’s Game of 2017 (So Far) – ‘Bendy and the Ink Machine’

Screen Critics Madison selects her favorite game of 2017 so far: the indie-horror game that has taken Steam by storm, Bendy and the Ink Machine.

There have been many great and innovative game releases for 2017, but my game of choice for 2017 so far is Bendy and the Ink Machine. This horror PC game quickly rose to fame after being posted on Gamejolt in February. It soon became available on Steam and already has merchandise coming to stores in the near future. It is a unique game that has earned the amount of love and support it has gotten.

The main reason why Bendy and the Ink Machine is my game of choice is the unique art style. The whole environment is in a cartoon style, and still manages to be just as thrilling and scary as a realistically styled game. The way the environment interacts with the player, using the ink and cartoon theme, is incredible and original. This is one of the many reasons that this game rose to fame so quickly.

Bendy and the Ink Machine reminds me of Five Nights at Freddy’s in the way of how it came to be so popular. It started off as a small indie-horror game that suddenly grew into something much bigger. In such a short amount of time, it earned its place to be available on Steam and is working on merchandise for fans to enjoy. This game has entered the spotlight even quicker then FNAF did, which is amazing. Although the two games have different styles of gameplay, they are both great representatives for the indie horror gaming industry.

The character designs are what also makes this game stand out from the rest. Bendy and the Ink Machine has a ‘Disney gone wrong’ type of theme with the characters and setting, but it has its own original twist on it that allows it to stand out. There have been games in the past that have attempted to do something similar, such as Five Nights at Treasure Island, but Bendy and the Ink Machine has been the most current and successful game in this style so far. It will be a tough game to beat at the rate it has been growing.

Bendy and the Ink Machine is still in early access, but has already shown major success and promise to the gaming community. It has also managed to build a strong and solid fanbase. While the game mostly revolves around puzzle solving, it also has a few effective jumpscares and intense chase scenes that make it a wonderful horror game. It has the right balance of challenge and fear that helps it to be an enjoyable and very terrifying experience for the player.

The voice acting in Bendy and the Ink Machine is on point too. In many indie horror games such as this, the voice acting can typically be the point to where the game falls flat. However, this game raises the standard for voice acting in indie horror gaming.

As a whole, there are many reasons why Bendy and the Ink Machine is my choice for game of the year so far in 2017. Even though it is in early access, it has proven to have so much potential and promises to be a wholesome, successful completed game. It is intense, exciting, and horrifying all in one. Although this game may have minor flaws along the way, it has shown to be a game with lots of room to grow and be the best in the indie horror industry.
