Characters do not always have to appear frequently to be a gaming icon. After only a few appearances, a character can make their mark on a gaming series and develop a strong fan base. If a character is loved enough and can make a big impact in a short time, that makes them an icon. Fang the Sniper is one of these cases.
Fang the Sniper, also known as Nack the Weasel, is a Sonic the Hedgehog character that has seemed to vanish from the main games; however, he certainly has not been forgotten. Fang has a hardcore fan base that is fighting for his return to the Sonic games. He is a loved character that has remained in the comics, but where did he go in the games?
In the early days of Sonic, Fang was featured in Sonic: Triple Trouble and Sonic the Fighters. But it seems that after these games released, Fang vanished from the games. The only time he ever seemed to be mentioned again was in a cameo in Sonic Generations. This had many fans in disappointment, as he had developed a substantial amount of fans from the early Sonic games and comics.
However, Fang, known as Nack the Weasel in the Sonic comics, has been kept alive there and has even played a crucial role in many of the comics. He frequently appears there and plays a key role. His personality and style has seemed to truly develop throughout the comics. Nack is portrayed as a greedy, ruthless, self-centered marksman who is frequently in and out of prison for his criminal behavior and activities.
Seeing Nack/Fang return would be intriguing considering how much his persona has developed throughout the comic series. Perhaps throwing him back into the Sonic game series would build the fan base for Sonic even more, and bring back nostalgia for long-time Sonic game and comic fans. With some voice acting and the advanced graphics that have been implemented into the newer Sonic games, Nack/Fang’s character could be solidified and even brought back into the main series. Considering he already has such a loving and strong fan base, many people would be happy to see him return.
Growing up, Nack/Fang was always one of my favorite Sonic characters. He always seemed to be one of the comic reliefs from the series, the character that could make you laugh even in a serious situation. Nack would always have a set plan, but with his bad luck, it would never go in his favor. He had a love for his hover bike, The Marvelous Queen, and his various array or laser guns and sniper rifles. From his unique appearance to short-tempered personality, he was always a one of a kind character for me. He always caught my eye in a positive way, and to see him not return saddened me due to his one of a kind personality in the series. However, it was still nice to see him frequently appear in the comics.
Despite his lack of appearance in the game series, Nack/Fang has been kept alive within the comic series and has created himself an outstanding group of fans who are fighting for his epic return. He is an icon within the Sonic series due to how much of an impact he has made in the series for how little he has actually shown up or had a key role in the games. We can only hope to see a grand return from Nack/Fang in the near future. I believe this is what truly makes him an icon for Sonic the Hedgehog.
