If like me, you were one of the unlucky souls to sit down in a cinema and watch Warner Bros spectacular car crash Suicide Squad – you might find yourself wondering what it would take to get back to check out any sequel. Turns out DC and Warner Bros had the same thought, with the pair reportedly looking to bring on board Gavin O’Connor as both lead writer and director of Suicide Squad 2.

The news comes via Variety, who claim that Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) has already signed up to write Suicide Squad 2 – and given indications that he would be willing to take on the role of director as well. So confident are Warner Bros apparently that they’re looking to speed the movie into a late 2017 production.

It would be an interesting choice for sure, given that previous rumors had pegged Mell Gibson, Jaume Collet-Serra and Jonathan Levine as potential replacements for Ayer (Who is working on Gotham City Sirens). There’s been a lot of mixed messages coming out from Warner Bros recently over the state of their DCEU, with talk of a Joker origin movie emerging from the shadows. Rumors have indicated that movie wouldn’t even be in the DCEU, potentially creating a confusing mess of continuity.

The big question obviously is would O’Connor be able to bring some sense of cohesion to the mess that was the original Suicide Squad. Audiences were left bewildered and feeling cold over the property, which had all the potential to go on and become a major hit for the studio.

DC has been working hard in the last 12 months to try and improve the public perception of their cinematic universe. Dawn of Justice failed to hit the expected standard, while the original Suicide Squad bombed hard with critics and audiences. 2017 though has been a lot kinder to the universe, as Wonder Woman arrived to record breaking receipts and near universal acclaim. With so many movies in the pipeline (including Batman, Harley Quinn, Joker, Flash, Aquaman and now Suicide Squad 2) it’s easy to get concerned over the direction of things to come.

With Justice League set to touch down at the end of 2017, it’s going to be an interesting period for the movie universe.

Are you looking forward to Suicide Squad 2?
