2017 has been a year of surprises in WWE. Yet nothing quite prepared fans for the shocking return of one former WWE Superstar this evening. During the main event of tonight’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view, fans were treated to the return of the Punjabi Playboy – The Great Khali.

The Great Khali is a former WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Back in 2007, the company was very strong on the Indian wrestler – giving him a monumental push along the way. It was his character that brought the Punjabi Prison to life. Rather infamously, Khali missed the original Punjabi Prison match against Undertaker due to “elevated liver enzymes”. He was instead replaced by The Big Show, the ECW Champion at the time.

Khali’s return adds to the huge list of surprising moves WWE have made this year. These range from Bray Wyatt winning the WWE Championship to Mojo Rawley becoming the third winner of the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Jinder Mahal becoming WWE Champion was arguably the most shocking moment – now that’s been added to thanks to Great Khali returning.

The Great Khali’s return suggests that the former World Heavyweight Champion will be taking on a management role alongside Mahal. Given his continued popularity in India, I guess it makes sense in that regard.

For my money, this is a horrible decision. No offence to him, but The Great Khali was an awful, awful wrestler. Pushed purely on his size alone, he was a danger to others in the ring and a complete flop when he entered the main event picture. There’s a reason the last years he spent in WWE were chasing Nattie around.

Despite this, WWE seem to be doubling down on their Indian stable, It’s clear at this time that Jinder Mahal is going to be the WWE Champion moving forward – and will likely remain such for a long-time yet.
