If (like us) you’ve been a touch concerned by the amount of Tony Stark/Iron Man appearing in the promotional material for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, then it seems our fears have been allayed slightly. Reports from within Marvel seem to suggest that Downey Jr’s appearance in Homecoming will be a one shot deal – with another MCU character set to replace him in the sequel.
The report suggests that Marvel will instead be choosing another of the MCU’s characters to go alongside Spider-Man in the sequel flick.
The logistics of the working relationship between Sony and Marvel probably mean that Marvel isn’t willing to throw all its top stars into the Spider-Man films – instead scattering them in slowly so as to allow Spider-Man chance to grow as a character on his own.
Given how expensive Robert Downey Jr. is for Marvel and Disney (Reports suggest he pockets anywhere from $10 million to $20 million per movie) it’s no surprise that they want to keep a short leash on where he turns up.
For my money this is a good thing. By the time we reach Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, we’ll be well beyond the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie. Since we don’t know what to expect from that outing, it makes sense to shift things around a fair bit. Maybe we’ll get that Captain America appearance at some point?
Early estimates from industry experts have Spider-Man on for a $100 million opening weekend – matching the performance of the DCEU’s recent Wonder Woman outing. It’s no surprise that the upcoming flick is set to do big numbers, he’s a much loved character. After his appearance in Captain America: Civil War – many fans can’t wait to see the web-slinger finally getting his own outing in the MCU.
Are you excited for the upcoming slate of MCU movies? Are you glad to hear Iron Man won’t be appearing in the sequel?
