As DC continues to invest in its expanded universe, reports continue to surface over which Hollywood stars will be filling the roles within. With Shazam reportedly set for a 2019 theater release, the hunt is on for an iconic actor to take up the mantle. If reports are to be believed, Warner Bros and DC are close to settling on long-time WWE Superstar John Cena as that actor.

The reports, originating from That Hashtag Show, suggest report that John Cena will step into the Shazam role, with Joshua Sasse also among the lead names. The role would see John Cena unavailable through early 2018 – potentially putting him out of Wrestlemania 34.

The role of Shazam is hugely important for DC, given that it’s the next movie set to enter production. The casting is hugely important, with the DC brief reading;

Based on the DC Comics character “Shazam!” Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word “Shazam! The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes. The wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.

Shazam is set to be helmed by Director David F. Sandberg, with the movie’s script already reportedly penned by Henry Gayden. It would be a huge coup for John Cena, who has been making increasing overtures into Hollywood. The WWE Superstar’s increased presence in Hollywood has led many to speculate that his in-ring career could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Should the rumors pan out, it also sets the scene for a potential Dwayne Johnson vs. John Cena matchup, with the veteran Hollywood actor set to take up the mantle of Black Adam within the DCEU. Given that Shazam and Black Adam have come to blows many times in the past, a rematch between the pair (having competed at Wrestlemania 28 and 29) would certainly be quite the spectacle.

Would John Cena make a good Shazam?
