That didn’t last long…
If nothing else, you can’t call WWE boring. AJ Styles shocked the WWE Universe several weeks back, capturing the WWE United States Championship from Kevin Owens – all during a house show. This news came from nowhere – leaving Kevin Owens without his Championship and giving Smackdown Live a new direction to move in. Now though, several weeks later, AJ Styles has lost that Championship during WWE Battleground.

The decision to drop the Championship back to Kevin Owens at Battleground had many fans both shocked and confused. For all the world, it seemed like AJ Styles was set for a major run with the Championship – as he even teased the return of the much-loved United States Open Challenge.
The change in Championship means that Kevin Owens is now a three-time WWE United States Champion.
To be fair to the pair – the match itself was excellent. There’s no denying that the two can work excellently together. It’s just a shame that WWE didn’t give the two the match finish that many fans had been hoping for.
Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the way this was done. The way the match ended was exceedingly confusing – both to live audiences (who didn’t really react) and to those watching at home. For fans who were expecting a conclusive ending to the months long feud between the pair, it didn’t do this. It’s a real shame too, as the match itself had been a great contest – with the two really looking strong in the process.
I guess this means that we’ll be getting another Kevin Owens/AJ Styles match at SummerSlam. Let’s just hope that WWE give that match a proper finish – one that doesn’t confuse the heck out of everyone.
Are you happy Kevin Owens has been crowned the new WWE United Champion? Was it the right decision for the Battleground pay-per-view?
