The WWE United Kingdom Championship is still the newest Championship in the company, and so has a long way to go in building prestige. That being said, tonight’s show stealing match from Pete Dunne and Tyler Bates will certainly go a long way in building that quickly – as the two fought it out over the Championship.

In the end, it was Pete Dunne (aka The Bruiserweight) who captured the Championship from sometimes adversary/sometimes friend Tyler Bates.

The match took place during this evening’s NXT TakeOver Chicago PPV on the WWE Network, making a very strong case for being the match of the night (if not the year). The live Chicago audience loved it from start to finish, giving the pair a standing ovation during the match. By the time the match finished, the live audience were very loudly applauding both mens efforts.

It’s the first time Pete Dunne has held WWE Championship gold and is the first time that the WWE United Kingdom Championship has changed hands.

Tyler Bates was crowned the inaugural Champion back in January of this year. His victory came on a two-night WWE Network Special that saw the crowning of the first United Kingdom Champion. He has successfully defended the belt against numerous Superstars across the WWE and independent shows since then – including Jack Gallagher a few weeks ago.

WWE recently began airing United Kingdom specials – signalling that a dedicated show may finally become a fixture on the WWE Network. We can only hope that they get their act together soon – these two are simply amazing and to not have them featured prominently would be a complete waste.

Are you happy to see Pete Dunne as the new WWE United Kingdom Champion? Who do you want to see him move on to face next for his Championship?
