WWE fans tuning in to tonights WWE Clash of Champions pay-per-view may have been expecting a slow opening to the show – but thanks to the surprise outcome of the United States Championship match, we now have a new Champion on Smackdown Live.
Dolph Ziggler successfully defeated Bobby Roode and Baron Corbin, successfully capturing the United States Championship in the process.

This reign marks the second time Dolph Ziggler has held the WWE United States Championship. It also marks his tenth Championship within WWE – having previously held the World Heavyweight Championship, Intercontinental Championship and World Tag Team Championships (as part of the Spirit Squad).
The result proves surprising, in particular when you consider recent rumors had suggested that Ziggler was close to potentially leaving WWE.
It’s no secret that the former World Heavyweight Champion has struggled to maintain momentum in the last few years. Despite competing for the WWE Championship at Summerslam 2016 – his continued decline through the Smackdown Live roster has left many to question his long-term future in the squared circle.
It also means Baron Corbin’s first championship reign in WWE has come to a shock end. Having captured the belt from AJ Styles a few months back – many expected him to hold the belt for a long period. Having already squandered his MITB cash-in, one has to wonder where Corbin’s character is heading within the company.

Our Take: Many were genuinely surprised to see Ziggler capture the US Title, including me. I didn’t even have him down as a contender really – if only because his recent lack of progress had me wondering if he had any kind of future.
