It’s been teased for the longest time – the rematch between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul. We didn’t get it in Star Wars Clone Wars – but if the mid-season trailer for Star Wars Rebels is anything to go by; fans will be getting to see the pair square off finally during Season Three of Star Wars Rebels.
Fans have been curious how Obi-Wan would play into Star Wars Rebels – with the show teasing his influence throughout the shows first two seasons. Rebels has already made use of Star Wars characters from across the continuity, from Darth Vadar to Yoda.
Darth Maul made his first (and only) appearance in the Star Wars movies all the way back in Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace. There he defeated Darth Maul by slicing him in two like a melon. You’d have thought that was the end of the story for the Sith lord, but he was later revived for the Star Wars Clone Wars television show. Since making yet another return in Star Wars Rebels, there have been teases that the Sith Lord was looking for a way to get even with old man Kenobi.
When Maul and Ezra combined the Sith and Jedi Holocrons, Maul was looking for “Hope,” while Ezra sought the “key to destroying the Sith.” The pair of Force users saw twin suns, and Maul emerged from his Force vision saying “He’s alive!” gleefully. This was a huge clue that the show was inevitably going to be making use of Obi-Wan.
It’s a bold choice by the Rebels team. As far as fans are concerned, Obi-Wan is sat on Tatooine waiting for the events of A New Hope to kick into gear. Changing this, even slightly, might be a bone of contention for some fans who find the additions daunting.
We’ll have to see how it plays out.
