Like it or not – Doctor Who is getting its first female incarnation. With Jodie Whittaker stepping into the famous blue police box, fans may be left wondering just how good she is. Fear not, as the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has had his say on the woman who will be taking over from his role.
Speaking to the Official Doctor Who website, Peter Capaldi explained that he’s delighted to see Whittaker taking up the role – praising her “great individuality and charm”, and expressing that she’s more than capable of stepping into The Tardis;
“Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker’s work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm,”
“She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She’s going to be a fantastic Doctor.”
It makes sense for Peter Capaldi to say this. After all, he’s still very much in the role of Doctor until the Christmas Special. It would be wholly bizarre for him to come out and say anything but good things about her. Yet it’s nice to see that he’s giving her such a glowing tribute.
While we’re not hugely familiar with her body of work, Jodie Whittaker appears to have a lot of admirers on social media. From Charlie Brooker to television producers who’ve worked with her – the conscientious is that she’s more than able to step up the to the task at hand.
The reaction appears to be somewhat mixed. Some fans fear for the future direction of the show, while others are fixating on the fact that she’s a female. Personally, I don’t care what gender she is – just as long as the show is good. If there’s one thing all Whovians can agree on – we just want an excellent Doctor Who.
What do you think of Peter Capaldi’s words? Are you excited to see a female Doctor?
