For all the fears leading up to the movies launch, 2017’s Power Rangers has seemingly managed to impress many fans of the TV series. With its mix of action of campy humor, there’s a lot for fans to take away from the flick. Yet one question hung over the entire movie – where was the popular Green Ranger ‘Tommy Oliver’? Fans got their answer in the post-credit scene, although the future of the character may not be as concrete as we first imagined.
Speaking to THR, Dacre Montgomery (who plays the Red Ranger in the new movie) says he and the rest of the cast would like to see a woman playing the part of Tommy;
“A lot of the cast and I have discussed that we think it should be a girl. It makes it even three girls, three boys.”
He goes on to say in the interview;
“It’s left blank. It’s a cliffhanger. Whoever you’re going to drop into that position — whether it’s a girl, it’s inevitably going to create drama. It’ll be interesting to drop that drama into it and see how we all relate to it and work with it.”
We’re not entirely sure how fans would take this one. Granted Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin, Becky G, Naomi Scott, and RJ Cyler pull off their roles with great fun and enjoyment, but this may be a change too far for the movies. In particular when you glance over at the mess Sony wandered into with their 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.
Then again, the after-credits scene was left ambiguous enough to leave wiggle room for a gender swap should the director and writers feel its the way forward for the movie franchise. Certainly we’re expecting to see him/her in the next movie – which the movies creators have stated will consist of at least another six movies.
What do you think? Should the much liked Green Ranger be gender swapped?
