Revisiting: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ SatAM TV Series

ScreenCritics Madison takes a look back at the SatAM ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ television cartoon. Was it the best of the Sonic cartoons?

Sonic the Hedgehog is a successful video game franchise, and has even had many TV shows based off of these games. One of the first TV shows was simply titled ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, airing in 1993. With high ratings and dedicated fans loving every episode, it quickly became a big hit for the series. The show centred around Sonic saving the planet from the evil Dr.Robotnik with his fellow freedom fighters. These characters were original to the Sonic series, but some were not in the original games. However, these characters made their way to the comics and played a crucial role in them as well.

The art style for the TV series became what was known as a classic Sonic the Hedgehog series. As more Sonic TV shows released, the art style progressively changed. However, this style will always be known as an original, classic Sonic style. The intro music will always be recognisable as well for the series and what marked the start for Sonic in the television world.

The characters in this series were all distinct with all different personalities and roles in the story. The Freedom Fighters all had a role in this dystopian world of Mobius while trying to save the world. This is one of the reasons this series was such a hit. Each character had their own traits that made them lovable and memorable.

There was one small Sonic the Hedgehog television series before this one, and that was ‘The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.’ It had a more lighthearted approach to the Sonic series, so this next Sonic series had a more story-driven and darker plot which made it memorable for the viewers. It had a story that lured you in and cliffhangers that kept you wanting more. This series, in my opinion, was one of the best for any Sonic the Hedgehog television series.

Sonic the Hedgehog’ had high ratings, with an 8.3 out of 10 on tv.com and a 7 out of 10 on IMDb. Many viewers praised the series for taking a more dark and serious approach that contrasted from the original and classic Sonic games and TV series. Other compliments to the series were the amount of action and adventure that was displayed in the series. It is still loved today by many avid Sonic fans.

For me, this was a childhood favorite television show. It had a dark tone that made it mysterious yet adventurous. The characters were interesting and unique, and I was able to distinguish my favorites. A few of my favorite characters included Bunnie Rabbot and Lupe. Despite the dark undertones, the series still had comic reliefs and humor, such as Sonic and Antoine. It had a mix of comedy and serious that made it a near-perfect cartoon series.

This series is one to look back on due to its success and the start of many series for the Sonic series. It was one of the best cartoons for the Sonic series, next to Sonic X. However, as time has went on, it seems that the newer Sonic television series, such as Sonic Boom, has lost its touch and isn’t quite there for the Sonic series. However, we still have the older Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon series to look back on and appreciate.
