Video Game Icons – Freddy Fazbear

ScreenCritics Madison enters Freddy Fazbear into the hall of Video Game Icons as indie-horror gaming’s most iconic villain.

Freddy Fazbear is not only the face of Five Nights at Freddy’s, but an icon for indie horror gaming as a whole. What started out as a small indie horror game exploded into a legendary horror game that will go down in history. Freddy Fazbear is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of this entire video game franchise.

Freddy started out in the original FNAF game as the lead singer in the animatronic band at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. However, at night, Freddy and his gang of animatronics would come to life and attempt to stuff the player inside an animatronic suit, thinking that the player was an endoskeleton without its costume. That was the simple but horrifyingly effective premise of the game; fend off Freddy and his friends until 6 am. After this game became a hit, another was released, giving Freddy a new look. Toy Freddy and Withered Freddy appeared in the second game, along with new jump scares. The well-timed jump scares are what made each Five Nights at Freddy’s game so popular. Freddy remained the main animatronic and leader of the gang.

However, when the next 3 games in the main franchise came out, Freddy took a backseat to some new animatronics. FNAF 3 featured a character named Springtrap, while FNAF 4 showcased a completely new animatronic named Fredbear. The newest release, Sister Location, talked mostly about an animatronic named Baby. However, Freddy had a sinister presence in all of these games and was still the looming shadow and icon for the entire franchise. A spin-off was released in between FNAF 4 and Sister Location called FNAF World, an adventure-RPG game that had a completely new take on the FNAF series. Freddy Fazbear was the party leader for each team when fighting off enemies, so he was an ironically heroic front-runner for that particular game.

A horror/mystery novel that re-imagined the events of the first game was released in 2015 titled “Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Silver Eyes”, penned by Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley. The cover of the novel featured Freddy Fazbear himself. A follow-up novel is set for release mid-2017 titled “Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones” and features an animatronic from FNAF 4, Nightmare. Even if Freddy Fazbear wasn’t always the star of every game, he had many variations that took center stage or had minor appearances in the games. Some examples are Golden Freddy, Shadow Freddy, Fredbear, and Funtime Freddy. The scary animatronic bear always has had a variation of himself in every game that has released.

Every since the game franchise has blown up in popularity, merchandise has been released, mainly of Freddy Fazbear himself. Some of this merchandise includes plushies, action figures, and clothing items. Avid fans are sure to get their hands on this Freddy Fazbear merchandise as soon as they can.

Freddy Fazbear has made a name for himself, and he will go down in history along with the franchise itself. Freddy represents an entire new genre of horror games and an entirely new style when it comes to indie horror gaming. When people see the joyfully creepy animatronic bear, their mind automatically goes to the legend that is Five Nights at Freddy’s. Freddy will always be the creepiest but most lovable bear in gaming history.
