She’s a Barbie girl, apparently…
Barbie Movie you say? Why yes of course there’s a Barbie movie – how could there not be? Sony Pictures are deep in development on the project, with rumors linking various directors and producers to the project. Perhaps though, it’s the rumor suggesting that Anne Hathaway is reportedly set to take up the lead role that surprises us most of all.
According to The Tracking Board, the Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway is currently being lined up to play the lead role of Barbie. This follows the departure of Amy Schumer from the project. With the movie set to land in cinemas in Summer 2018, there isn’t all that long for the project to get moving.
The troubled production has also seen several script variations – meaning there isn’t even a final script on the table yet. Reportedly the screenplay for the film centers around a doll living in an idyllic “Barbieland”; who is expelled from paradise for being imperfect. Whether this is done in an ironic way or not – it looks like the movie will be causing more than a few big waves when it touches down in cinemas.
Based on the popular Mattel dolls, Barbie is being co-produced by Sony and Mattel. It’ll be the first time in a long while that the much-loved toy has been brought to life in live-action form.
For my money, Anne Hathaway would be a great choice for the role – if the script is up to scratch. There’s no doubt that she’s a talented actress, but a Barbie movie can’t help but conjure up images of awkward storylines and laughable characters. I’m all Mattel and Sony trying new things – but I don’t think there’s going to be a huge demand to see this one when it lands.
Given the state of Sony’s movie business right now, it’ll only add to the sense of foreboding.
