Henry Cavill could probably be a great Superman if only the scripts would let him. After two so-so outings, it seems that the actor is ready to finally get his hands dirty with DC’s biggest superhero – explaining that the “real” Superman will finally be revealed in Justice League.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cavill revealed that himself and Johns had been taking a long look at the history of the character – looking to draw inspiration from the characters past in an attempt to uncover what his true character is;
“Geoff [Johns] and I have been delving into the history of the character to get to the core of who Superman is. This is the first time we see the true Superman. The Superman who is confident, and sure, and full of hope and joy.”
It should be noted that Geoff Johns only came on board for the DC cinematic universe after Dawn of Justice was beyond saving. Johns is held in high regard by DC comic book fans and has a long-held relationship with the source material – so he would know how best to get the most from Superman.
Cavill has been making the rounds as part of the upcoming Justice League movie. The star hasn’t featured in a good 99% of the promotional material – owing to the fact that his character was killed off at the end of Dawn of Justice. Of course, this being a comic book movie, there’ll be plenty of ways to bring him back in the upcoming movie.
Justice League has been receiving positive early critique from critics – a sign that DC has finally got its house in order.
Our Take: One of the major problems with Cavill’s portrayal of Superman is just how soulless he feels. In Man of Steel, he felt like a dark, brooding presence rather than the light and jovial character fans have seen in the past. DC’s big push to make the character gritty and realistic ultimately harmed the overall movie and probably hurt the cinematic universe more than he’s helped it.
We’ll have to see if coming back means good or bad things for the upcoming Justice League movie.
