Does Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite’s Roster Show Capcom Has Become Lazy?

Screen Critics Robert takes a look at the state of Marvel vs. Capcom’s roster – asking if it’s a sign the developer has gotten lazy.

It’s fair to say that Capcom’s upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite hasn’t been universally praised en route to its release. With a demo that underwhelmed and some eye brow raising decisions being made – this certainly isn’t the Marvel vs. Capcom title fans have been clamoring for. Yet as the announcement of the final roster is made, I can’t help but feel more concerned over the direction of the game. Capcom’s effort with this game appears to be waning – raising the question; have Capcom got lazy?

One area of particular concern for fans appears to be consistent among fans, the final roster. Confirmed by Capcom, there will be 30 fighters making up the game when it touches down. It’s clear that in terms of quantity and quality, Capcom has opted for a step backward. When you look at this roster it’s lacking. Majority of these characters are from Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. The Capcom side seems to be worse because there are only two new characters. They are Megaman X who some people say he isn’t new because he’s from Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 so you can make the argument and you have Jedah from the Darkstalkers series. It’s been over 10 years since we’ve seen Jedah in a brand new Darkstalkers game so seeing him make a return in a brand new game is awesome to see.

The Marvel side is a little bit better but it still has its issues. We already know that there aren’t any X-Men characters and we know the reason why. Now granted I believe Fox owns the movie rights to the X-Men and Fantastic 4 so it still doesn’t make any sense as to why they didn’t add those characters. I know they are focusing on the Marvel Universe storyline but you still have your legacy characters such as Wolverine, Storm, and big time villains Magneto and Dr. Doom.
The roster only being 30 characters bothers a lot of people because if you look back at Marvel vs Capcom 2 it has 56 characters. Now I do feel having two Wolverines were pointless but the roster was huge and you see that Capcom worked very hard on the roster. Marvel vs Capcom 3 has 36 characters. (Thirty-Eight if you add the two DLC characters.) Now it wasn’t the perfect roster but it was more than Infinite’s roster. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 had a total of 50 characters, once again more than Infinite’s roster.

Things don’t get much better on the DLC side of things. There are six DLC characters coming to Marvel Infinite. We know that Sigma is DLC but the weird part is that he’s part of the story fusing with Ultron to become Ultron Sigma. I don’t want to be disrespectful but that seems pretty lazy. A character is part of the story but isn’t part of the main roster? Black Panther is another DLC character that’s part of the story. Now we heard that female Monster Hunter is in the story but is a DLC character. We don’t have any information on the third DLC character from the Capcom Side. The other two rumored DLC characters on the Marvel side are the Winter Soldier and Venom. Its cool to see those two especially seeing Venom but should he be DLC? Venom is a returning character from the series and seeing a character like that being DLC wouldn’t make any sense.

let’s get into the DLC characters. There are six DLC characters coming to Marvel Infinite. We know that Sigma is DLC but the weird part is that he’s part of the story fusing with Ultron to become Ultron Sigma. I don’t want to be disrespectful but that seems pretty lazy. In the end, it doesn’t seem like Capcom has given effort to this character roster. It’s a total of 36 characters including DLC. They aren’t even close to the number of characters in Ultimate vs Capcom 3. You have SNK’s King of Fighters XIV which had 50 characters for the starting roster and has 4 DLC characters bringing the roster up to 54 and there are rumors that more DLC characters are coming. You see that SNK really gave an effort in The King of Fighters XIV. The opposite of what Capcom is doing.

There aren’t many new characters in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite majority of the cast are returning characters. I’m sure there will be more DLC characters coming down the road and I think Capcom is focused on having DLC characters being the new characters to the series but at the same time how much money are consumers going to spend?

When you play a fighting game the most important thing is the character roster. That’s what fans look forward to especially when it’s the VS series. We expect a huge roster and a lot of new characters and so far we haven’t gotten it but hey I guess this is the new Capcom.
